Alex's Story
Background:
I was born in Alexandria, VA, and after a brief flirtation with the trombone, started singing in church and school choirs. I discovered a love of serious a cappella music in high school, where I sang with the Yorktown Madrigals, which toured the US and Canada. In college, I was invited to join the GWU Troubadours, a more contemporary a cappella group with a tradition of vocal jazz, which toured the US and Italy. One highlight of this experience was performing an arrangement of Tom Lehrer’s “Silent E,” and being accosted by strangers on campus identifying me as “the Silent E guy.”
Upon moving to Atlanta in 1995 I sang with two contemporary a cappella groups, one of which, Local Vocals, competed in the Harmony Sweepstakes and won Audience Favorite. I took a break after Local Vocals disbanded (and I was in graduate school and raising small children), but recently have been thrilled at the opportunity to rejoin serious choirs.

What drew you to becoming a singer with FSA?
I have been looking for an opportunity to sing a variety of music, and Corbett Jordan-Oldham encouraged me to join, upon hearing what kind of group I was looking for.

What keeps you coming back?
The music! I’ve only been here briefly, but I’ve loved the opportunity to work on a broad range of more challenging pieces, and am very excited to be able to present them to an audience.

What is your vision for the future of The Festival Singers of Atlanta?
While it would be great to have a few more voices, I hope we never lose the precision and intimacy of small group singing. I would also welcome the opportunity to do more community shows and other collaborations.

Why should someone join The Festival Singers of Atlanta?
They should definitely join if they are looking for a fun and challenging way to stretch themselves musically.
