At The Festival Singers of Atlanta, the strength of our ensemble comes from the remarkable individuals who make it whole. Our Singer Spotlight series celebrates each member by sharing their personal journey, what drew them to FSA, and why this musical community continues to hold a special place in their lives.

My Story

 

Background:  

For me, it started in 2010 with a Groupon for 4 music lessons for $25. While attending one of my lessons, I saw a poster for an upcoming community production of "Into The Woods". My instructor encouraged me to audition, for the experience if nothing else, and I ended up being cast as the "Mysterious Man" (a.k.a. the Baker's father). From there I was in several other productions, including being cast as one of the leads. In 2015, I joined the Gateway Men's Choir in St. Louis, and sang with them for a few years, eventually meeting someone online, and moving to Atlanta.

What drew you to becoming a singer with FSA?

After moving to Atlanta, COVID hit and over 2020, I really had nothing to do, and not many people with which to interact. So, I joined The Festival Singers of Atlanta to meet people and socialize. My first concert with them was Winter 2020 (an online concert), and I've been a member since.

What keeps you coming back?

They're a nice group of people, easy to sing and talk with about music and non-music things. We are a small group at the moment, so it's easier to feel like you are a meaningful part of the choir, not just another voice in the crowd. As this is a community choir, we have people coming and going from season to season, depending up their schedule and availability, so it always feels fresh.

What is your vision for the future of The Festival Singers of Atlanta?

I would love to see the group grow to about 25-50 singers, big enough to handle scores multi-voice pieces, but still small enough to feel that you matter. I'd love to see us interact with other groups in the community, like we just did this year, with the choir from Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. Some of us even went on a choir-tour of Ireland in 2024 with two other choirs, one from a university in Kansas, and the other from a North Carolina church, and I'd love to do something like that again.

Why should someone join The Festival Singers of Atlanta?

It's a great way to express your creative side, and everyone has one, even if it hasn't had much exercise lately. It takes you out of your daily routine (mine was working from home, which limited my interactions as well), and gives you something to learn and refine all the way up to performance day, when you can see how much your audience enjoyed the concert.
